An increase in the average temperature of the planet’s atmosphere and oceans, caused by human activities (especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation). These activities release large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These gases act as a “blanket” that traps the sun’s heat in the atmosphere, causing an increase in global temperature.
