A politico-military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, founded after World War II in 1949 as an anti-Soviet organisation. It has 31 member states. Any European state that is able to comply with the principles of this treaty and contribute to the security of the North Atlantic area can become a member of NATO. Decisions must be taken unanimously, but each member has the right of veto.
