Commonly known as a ‘heart attack’, this occurs when the blood flow to part of the heart is cut off, causing damage to the heart muscle. This obstruction is usually caused by a thrombus blocking one of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. Typical symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating and nausea. Myocardial infarction requires immediate medical intervention to prevent permanent damage to the heart or death. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
