The Commission is the EU’s executive branch, politically independent from the governments of individual Member States and with exclusive competence for drafting new legislation and implementing decisions of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. For the next five years it has set three priorities (different from the previous five years): the defence of European values within the EU and around the world; a focus on security and defence, including a comprehensive approach to migration and border management; and a focus on economic aspects, with the strengthening of competitiveness, innovation and the digital and ecological transition.
