The obligation of citizens to serve in a country’s armed forces for a specified period of time. Historically, it was introduced in many countries to ensure a sufficient number of soldiers for national defence. In many countries it has been abolished, transforming the army into a professional and voluntary force. In others, such as Israel and South Korea, conscription still exists.
