A chronic disease characterised by high levels of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia) due to a deficit in the production or action of insulin. There are two main types: type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease, and type 2 diabetes, which is often related to lifestyle and obesity. If left uncontrolled, it can cause serious complications in the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Treatment includes diet, exercise, medication and, in some cases, insulin.
