Imaginary character from French Christmas folklore, particularly from Lorraine, who appears on 6 December as the assistant to the gift-bearer Saint Nicholas. According to tradition, every Christmas, while Saint Nicholas hands out presents to good children, Père Fouettard accompanies him and threatens naughty children with a whip.
