Between 2022 and 2025, Portugal is facing major challenges in the field of municipal waste management, in order to meet the commitments made within the European Union and the objectives set out in the Strategic Plan for Municipal Waste (PERSU 2030).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

European commitments and PERSU 2030<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The European Union has set ambitious targets for waste management<\/a>, including a recycling<\/a> rate of 55% by 2025 and 65% by 2035. PERSU 2030<\/a>, in line with these guidelines, sets national targets for waste prevention, reuse, recycling<\/a> and reduction of landfill<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recycling and landfill rates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the recycling<\/a> rate in Portugal was 32%, far from the 55% target set for 2025. Furthermore, in 2022, approximately 57% of municipal waste was landfilled, which highlights the continued dependence on this method of disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are therefore facing a complex scenario in which the coming years are critical for the adoption of measures that will allow Portugal to recover and get as close as possible to the objectives set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To this end, various measures have been put in place with the main objective of diverting recoverable waste from landfill<\/a> and improving the recycling<\/a> rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portugal has implemented several measures to achieve the recommended targets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
