As World War<\/a> II ended in 1945, nations lay in ruins and the world yearned for peace. Representatives from 50 countries met at the United Nations Conference on International Organisation in San Francisco, California, from 25 April to 26 June 1945. Over the next two months they drafted and then signed the Charter of the United Nations, creating a new international organisation, the United Nations, which it was hoped would prevent another world war<\/a> like the one they had just experienced.<\/p>\n\n

Now, more than 75 years later, the United Nations continues to work to maintain international peace and security, provide humanitarian assistance to those in need, protect human rights and uphold international law.<\/p>\n\n
